AURC Spring 2024 Newsletter: Artificial Intelligence Edition

AI: Tech’s New Frontier

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to machines that can think like humans and perform tasks that are considered "smart." The goal for AI is to be able to do things that normally require human intelligence, using its technology to process large amounts of data in ways humans cannot.

AI is shaking up technology as we know it. For some, AI is empowering individuals with disabilities like never before, enabling hands-free interaction through speech recognition and real-time object description for the visually impaired. However, some also caution against loose data privacy and biased AI algorithms, reminding us to tread lightly as we navigate its development.

AI and People with Disabilities - AURC Survey Results

We asked and you answered!

Recently, the AURC led a study exploring the perspectives of individuals with disabilities on AI, asking questions about opinions, uses and trust levels. The survey AURC members completed from the Winter 2024 Newsletter produced insights that will inform inclusive innovation. While we are working to develop the results into publications and presentations, we wanted our AURC members to be the first to get a peek.

87.4% of AURC members believe that AI has the potential to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

Only 25.2% report that they trust AI.
